Certainly! Here's a simple sewing pattern for an adult bonnet:
Materials needed:
- 1 yard of fabric (cotton or linen works well)
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
- Elastic (approximately 1/4 inch wide)
- Ribbon or bias tape for ties (optional)
- Pattern paper (or you can create your own pattern using the measurements below)
Instructions:
- Measure the circumference of the head for which the bonnet is intended. Let's call this measurement A.
- Determine the desired depth of the bonnet. This will be the distance from the base of the neck to the desired point on the forehead when the bonnet is worn. Let's call this measurement B.
- Create the pattern for the bonnet by drawing a rectangle on pattern paper. The width of the rectangle should be 1/4 of measurement A plus 1 inch (for seam allowance). The length of the rectangle should be measurement B plus 2 inches (for seam allowance).
- Cut out the pattern piece.
- Fold the fabric in half with right sides together.
- Place the pattern piece on the fabric and pin it in place.
- Cut around the pattern piece, through both layers of fabric, to create two matching fabric pieces.
- Remove the pattern piece and set it aside.
- With right sides together, pin the two fabric pieces together along the curved edge.
- Using a sewing machine, stitch along the pinned edge with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.
- Trim the seam allowance to about 1/4 inch.
- Turn the fabric right side out and press the seam flat with an iron.
- Fold the bottom edge (the edge opposite the curved edge) up by 1/2 inch and press with an iron.
- Fold the same edge up again by 1 inch and press with an iron.
- Stitch along the folded edge to create a casing for the elastic, leaving a small opening to insert the elastic.
- Measure a piece of elastic to fit comfortably around the head. The length of the elastic should be slightly smaller than measurement A.
- Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the casing.
- Overlap the ends of the elastic by about 1 inch and stitch them together securely.
- Close the opening in the casing by stitching across it.
- Optional: Attach ribbon or bias tape to the sides of the bonnet to use as ties. Cut two equal-length pieces, fold them in half, and attach them to the sides of the bonnet.
- Give the bonnet a final press with an iron, and it's ready to wear!
Feel free to customize the pattern by adding embellishments or adjusting the measurements to suit your preferences. Enjoy sewing your adult bonnet!
